Disinfection Through Electrolysis

​

The Vensen system is the culmination of decades of research, development, and continuous enhancement. We have successfully created systems that produce between 0.5 and 120 kg/h of sodium hypochlorite per installed unit, with concentrations reaching up to 0.8% NaClO. All Vensen systems are custom-designed, manufactured, delivered, and installed as "ready-to-use" solutions.

Derived from this technology, specifically for smaller applications, is Venlyt®, a compact salt electrolysis system with production capacities ranging from 3 g/h to 200 g/h.

Applications of Saltwater and Seawater Electrolysis

Vensen's saltwater electrolysis is primarily used for drinking water production, cooling towers, process water in various industries, water purification, and agricultural applications. Venlyt® finds its use in small cooling towers, dehumidifiers, greenhouse cultivation, and in building water supplies to combat Legionella bacteria.

Seawater electrolysis from Vensen is mainly utilized in the cooling towers of power plants and chemical industries located near the sea. Other applications include desalination plants, LNG stations, and seawater swimming pools.

Electrolysis Process

The Vensen system series employs membrane-less electrolysis tubes, producing sodium hypochlorite solutions with up to 0.8% active substance. Below 1%, this substance is not classified as hazardous under EU Regulation 1272/2008 (CLP) and is biodegradable.

To generate 1 kg of NaClO, approximately 3.5 kg of NaCl (salt) and 4 kW of electrical power are required. During electrolysis, a maximum of 0.35 liters of hydrogen is theoretically produced, although the practical output is significantly lower. The internal ventilation system introduces ample air to dilute the hydrogen below critical levels, ensuring maximum safety.

There are two types of electrolysis:

  • Saltwater Electrolysis, using table salt and water

  • Seawater Electrolysis, which utilizes the natural salinity of seawater.

Saltwater Electrolysis

The saltwater electrolysis systems in the Vensen series consist of a water softener, brine tank, electrolysis cells with rectifiers, product tank, dosing, and control systems.

  • Capacity for saltwater electrolysis: 0.5 to 40 kg/h per electrolysis unit.

  • Concentration of NaClO solution produced on-site: 0.5% to 0.8% active ingredient NaClO.

  • Consumption per kg of NaClO: up to 3.5 kg of NaCl, 4 kWh.

Seawater Electrolysis

The seawater electrolysis systems in the Vensen series include submersible pumps, self-cleaning filters, electrolysis cells with rectifiers, product tanks, dosing, and control systems.

  • Capacity for seawater electrolysis: 0.5 to 120 kg/h per electrolysis unit.

  • Concentration of NaClO solution produced on-site: up to 0.25% active ingredient NaClO.

  • Consumption per kg of NaClO: up to 4 kWh, no salt required.
